When the pads become this thin there is often a loud squealing sound emitted from the wear indicator. The high pitched screeching sound can often be emitted even when the brake is not applied. Furthermore, the noise is often worse when going in reverse. This noise is your signal to get to a shop quickly. Brake pad wear beyond this point will result in more out-of-pocket expense than is needed.
Further neglect will lead to severe damage and replacement of the brake rotor as metal components of the brake pad come in contact. Having your brake pads serviced as soon as they reach minimal thickness, will extend the life of your braking system. Acting quickly will prevent the need for costly rotor replacement. From a safety standpoint, deteriorated brake pads will dramatically increase the distance required for you to stop.
